Struggles Turned Into Strengths
Experiencing grief can feel overwhelming, affecting every aspect of your life. Oftentimes people find themselves experiencing some aspects of the stages of grief without realizing it. Through the process of therapy, you’ll begin to gently observe times when sadness or depression takes center stage in response to grief. You’ll begin to notice when you may be engaging in bargaining behaviors as you wish your circumstances were anything other than what they are, denying this new reality. Clients are sometimes surprised to find themselves feeling a bit more irritable or lashing out in anger or frustration at times when before the loss, they would have remained calm. Grief impacts each person differently and each loss is as unique as the person, or pet, you lost.
Often in my practice and blogs I reference pop culture as it relates to real-life experiences. Thinking of two popular movies about grief, PS, I Love You and more recently, Good Grief, we see some common experiences when it comes to loss. Both main characters experienced the loss of a spouse. Even though one lost a spouse to an illness gradually over time and the other experienced a sudden loss, they both went through the common stages of grief. It’s true that manner of death can impact how we feel about the loss, but regardless, most people will find they move through the classic stages of grief in response: denial, depression, anger, bargaining, and acceptance. People also move through these stages fluidly, meaning they can move back and forth through them; previously it was thought people graduate from one to the next but now we know that’s not the case. We see both main characters in the films experience initial shock/denial, the darkness of depression, moments of frustration and anger, wishing circumstances were different, and in time some acceptance. We also see complicated grief in Good Grief as the hero of the story learns of a secret, a betrayal by his husband after it is too late to speak with him about it. This left unresolved feelings and frustration that needed to be navigated. These are the types of complex issues grief counseling for women near Denver Colorado can help address.
Grief reactions not only follow deaths but can also occur after a significant life change. Changes to life as we knew it can be so significant that we mourn things as we knew them. Grief reactions like this can follow a divorce, a move, a job change, or the ending of a friendship. Some also experience something akin to a grief reaction from the lingering effects of past traumas.
Although these are difficult circumstances, these challenges present opportunities for growth and positive change. Through grief counseling for women near Denver Colorado, I help you transform your struggles into strengths. Together, we will explore practical solutions to address your anxiety and find ways to honor your grief. By engaging in grief counseling for women near Denver Colorado, you will discover new perspectives and coping strategies to enhance your well-being.
